Nighttime Diapering
Most babies can wear their regular diaper with an extra insert and be fine all night. If this is your baby, simply add a doubler inside their diaper at night and be grateful!
And then some babies just can't seem to stay dry all night - they, and the bed, and you, end up soaked. Happy Baby Company specializes in finding bulletproof nighttime diapering systems for every baby. Here are our recommendations if you are having trouble keeping baby dry all night:
*You can add a wool, fleece or silk liner to these diapers to help the baby feel drier.
Night diaper troubleshooting:
Baby sleeps on his stomach and the diaper leaks at the front waist.
>Try one of the combos above that has a pull-on style cover, or for a pocket diaper, open the rise larger and add a small hemp insert folded up in the front of the pocket.
Baby sleeps on his side and the diaper leaks at the leg and hip.
>Pockets or AIOs likely won't work at night - use a fitted or Snappied prefold with a pull-on style cover.
Baby wakes when he feels wet.
>Try adding a fleece liner to any natural fiber diaper, or try the fleece-lined diapers like the Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted or One-Size Semi-Fitted and the pocket diapers.
Baby just pees so much that not even two disposables could contain it all!
>Two or three prefolds, one laid on top of the other, Snappied on, with a fleece or wool cover.
The diaper works fine, but the ammonia smell in the morning knocks me out and is irritating baby's skin.
>Ammonia smell is caused by a build-up of ammonia salts from the urine drying in the diaper. To fix this, wash the affected diapers with 1-2 Tablespoons chlorine bleach, well-diluted. To keep it from coming back, rinse all morning diapers and inserts thoroughly in fresh, running water. Do a cold pre-wash before every hot wash and add 1 cup white vinegar to the pre-wash. Consider using flats as your night diaper or the insert as they are not subject to build-up.
